Far from Lhasa, the East of Tibet offers untold adventures that take travelers across verdant grasslands, over snowy mountain passes, and beyond the shores of holy lakes. On this journey, explore the hidden monasteries of Amdo and ride horses in secret valleys with Tibetan nomads. Learn about the great Buddhist traditions of Labrang and Kumbum, two ancient monasteries that house thousands of monks. Visit a Mongolian enclave on the frontier lands and travel to small, colorful villages in the mountains.
Day 1: Xining – Kumbum – Qinghai Lake
Drive to Kumbum, a famous monastery outside of Xining. Kumbum is home to over 600 monks and has some great hills around the monastery to hike. From Kumbum, head to Qinghai Lake, the biggest lake in China. Stay at a hotel or guesthouse on the shores of the lake.
Day 2: Qinghai Lake – Gui’de (Chika) – Xining
Drive east to the sand dunes and then down to the small Tibetan town of Chika. Visit Jokhang Temple, then walk over the Yellow River bridge and drive back to Xining.
Day 3: Xining – Gunlong Monastery- Repkong (Tongren)
Drive to Gunlong Monastery, one of the most famous and oldest monasteries near the northern Dzongchu River of Amdo. Continue to drive southeast along the Yellow River to Rebkong.
Day 4: Repkong
Visit the Rongwu Gonchen monastery, upper and lower Sangeshong monastery and Artist villages and families. You will have the opportunity to see Tibetan artists painting traditional scroll thangka.
Day 5: Repkong – Labrang via Gangya Grassland
Drive along a narrow valley, past small villages and temples to a vast grassland called Gangya Grassland. Once you arrive in Labrang, a monk will give you a tour of one of the most famous monasteries in Amdo.
Day 6: Labrang – Taktsang Lhamo Monastery (Langmusi)
Driving along the Sangkok grassland and visit Taktsang Lhamo monastery, a monastery located on the border of Gansu and Sichuan. This area, which is inhabited by nomads, offers great hiking and horse back trekking.
Day 7: Taktsang Lhamo
Picnic on a hill and go hiking, trekking, or horseback riding.
Day 8: Taktsang Lhamo – Sogdzong (Mongolian town) – Tsekog
Drive through a valley to a Mongolian town. Visit Mongolian yurts and ride over the Tsekog Grassland.
Day 9: Tsekog – Xining
Drive through a virgin forest to the farming lands of Amdo, then drive back to Xining along the Yellow River.
Day 10: Depart Xining
Your driver will drop you off at the airport in Xining.
