The land of Yellow Rivers and source

One of the traditional names for Eastern Tibet is Chushi Gangdruk, which means “The Land of Four Rivers and Six Ranges”. On this natural journey, travel to the source of the Yellow River, visit the largest lake in China, and meet monks and lamas that meditate in caves. From a mountain pass, take in the view of two sister lakes and then continue on to a hard-to-reach, colorful Khampa town. At last, visit the sacred Drakar Dredzong, the monastery known as the monkey kingdom in the white rocky mountains

Day 1: Xining and Kumbum Monastery

Visit the Tibet Medical Museum to see the largest thangka painting in the world. Next, head to Kumbum, one of the six great Gelupa monasteries. Kumbum is the birth place of Je Tsongkapa, the founder of Gelupa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, and boasts enormous influence in both religious and secular life in Tibet.

Day 2: Xining – Qinghai Lake – Dredzong Monastery

Take pictures of the blooming yellow flowers along the shores of Qinghai lake and visit the nomads herding yaks and sheep. Drive to Dredzong Monastery and stay nearby.

Day 3: Dredzong Monastery – Jyekundo (Yushu)

Drive to Serdzong, a remote Buddhist monastery set on the side of a rugged mountain at over 3600m. Dredzong provides excellent hiking opportunities. Continue on to Jyekundo, a large town populated almost entirely by Tibetans.

Day 4: Jyekundo

Visit Wencheng Temple/Domkar monastery, Batang Grasslands,  and hike a grassy hill.

Day 5: Jyekundo

Visit Jyeku Monastery, which is high on a hill in the center of town. Next, go to the Gyanak Mani Prayer Stone pile, where there are great opportunities to take photos of local pilgrims.

Day 6: Jyekundo – Nangchen

Drive into a remote area of Nangchen to catch a glimpse of virgin forests and marsh pastures. Nangchen is located at the boundary of Qinghai and the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Day 7: Nangchen

Visit some of the great monasteries and a Buddhist retreat center – you will have a good chance to meet some of the retreat monks and lamas.

Day 8: Nangchen

Visit Surmang monastery, a prominent Karma Kagyupa sect monastery of Tibetan Buddhism. This place offers many short hike possibilities and beautiful scenic views.

Day 9: Nangchen – Jyekundo

Easy day drive back to Jyekundo and walking around the town.

Day 10: Jyekundo – Motoi

Drive back to Motoi.

Day 11: Madoi – Tso Kyarang and Ngorang Lake

Drive around 100kms to visit two sister lakes, circumambulate the temple at the source of the Yellow River and invigorate yourself by walking through thousands of colorful prayer flags.

Day 12: Matoi – Xining

Day 13:  Depart Xining

Leave Xining via plane or train.
