My name is Kunchok Dhondup, also known as Jamyang, the founder and co-owner of Journey to Tibet.
I have been working as a professional travel agent and guide since 2006, specializing in journeys across the Tibetan Plateau and the neighboring ethnic regions of western China, including Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), Kham, and Amdo.
I grew up as a Buddhist monk from the age of nine, an experience that deeply shaped my understanding of Tibetan culture, spirituality, and way of life. Later, with the generous help of close friends from Australia and Switzerland, I was given a rare opportunity to study English and Tibetan history, opening the door to sharing Tibet with the wider world.
In 2009, with the encouragement and support of Mr. Shane Foyster from Australia, I established my own travel company. Coming from a small village, this was beyond anything I had imagined—but through dedication and hard work, it has grown successfully. Over the years, I have organized thousands of tours throughout Tibet, particularly in Kham and Amdo, and it brings me great joy to know that travelers value the personal care and attention I give to every journey.
I graduated in Tibetan History and English from the English Training Program (ETP) at Qinghai Normal University, and I also studied eco-tourism. In 2010, I obtained the Chinese National Tour Guide License, and I have been actively working in tourism ever since.
I have collaborated with various international organizations and institutions, including educational travel programs and National Geographic-related projects, as well as supporting authors of travel books such as Eastern Tibet and The History of Central Asia.
As a traveler and explorer, I am deeply passionate about land, culture, and human connection. I have extensive experience in high-altitude trekking and camping, and I specialize in immersive cultural journeys—exploring ancient grottos and caves along the Southern Silk Road, sacred monasteries, and the remote retreat areas of Tibet.
My mission is to offer travelers authentic, heartfelt, and meaningful experiences, guided by knowledge, respect, and a lifelong love for Tibet.
