Amdo tours

Amdo, the traditional Tibetan name for what is now most of Qinghai and parts of Gansu and Sichuan, comprises vast grasslands, towering mountains, alpine lakes, and some of the most important religious and cultural centers in the Tibetan world. Spread over three provinces, there are roughly 1.6 million Amdowas, with a language, culture, and homeland that differs from Central Tibet. In Amdo, you’ll enjoy a level of freedom and authenticity that is tough to find in other parts of the Tibetan world. The Qinghai borderlands between the Tibetan, Han, Mongol, Salar, and Hue cultures are amazing to learn about the history of cultural interaction and the influence it has had on architecture, language, and spirituality. Other cultural highlights from this region include the renowned Labrang and Kumbum Monasteries, the Rebgong Art Center, and the opportunity to spend time in a home-stay with a traditional nomadic family. Geographical attractions include Qinghai Lake and Bird Island, and spectacular treks on and around sacred snow-capped mountains like Amnye Machen and Nyanbo Yurtse. If you are interested in traveling off the beaten path and seeing some of the many diverse dimensions of Tibetan life, Amdo is for you.
